Welcome to Programr: something new but old

Something new but old

This is my first email, so it’s best I introduce myself. If you’ve come from the JSA, which many of you have, you’ll know me as “Shaw”. I’m the co-founder of the JSA and the founder of Programr.

A bit about me: I’m 35, I have two daughters, and I’ve trained since I was 12. I compete in powerlifting and still play rugby. I train for performance, and to stay strong, injury-free and capable in everyday life.

Why build Programr?

When Smith moved on to other things, we decided it was best to close the JSA. I went off on my own to build an app I could use for my own training, and share with others who love training and want to build and keep their physical resilience.

“Fitness” can seem like a modern trend, but it’s ancient. The Greeks had gyms and valued physical fitness. The word “gym” itself comes from ancient Greek. Being physically fit improves your quality of life, and there is no substitute for resistance training. You can’t buy strength or take a shortcut to it. The only way to get stronger, move better and become more physically resilient is to train, following a well-structured program. I think that’s what makes it so rewarding: there are no shortcuts, and your results are proportional to your effort.

What is new is how much we now know about exercise, and how we can perform, track and progress it. That’s what Programr is for. It gives you the most modern way to build and follow a program, and the knowledge to back up your progress.

From next week, I’ll write about a new topic each week. There’s so much to cover that this could go on for years 😂. The aim is simple: to build your understanding of training so you can reach your goals and improve your quality of life.

I’ll leave you with something my dad said to me recently, at 65: “I should have started the gym sooner. It’s actually a very helpful thing you’re doing, helping people stay fit.”

Train with a program that progresses every week

Programr builds your program around your goal and adjusts it from what you actually lifted.
